What are the downsides and what are the opportunities when big breaking news overwhelm our newsfeeds?

When headlines with bad news overwhelm our newsfeed, perhaps at those moments we express some of our worst tendencies. One of them is to spread fear. For instance, the feeling of fear under the threat of a nuclear war, or fear from more series of destructive hurricanes in the future, such were the ones that swiftly moved through the Caribbean and Florida, buttering entire islands and communities. These are fears that it may get worse, and both cases are realistic, whether it comes down to an unclear political agenda in the first instance or climate change in the second one. 

What strikes further, is that, still, regardless the magnitude of this news through August and September 2017, they were, somehow, in a way an "Insta-reality". After they were no longer "Breaking News", more or less everything slowly went quiet on the topics. Naturally, then other headlines overwhelmed the newsfeeds. 

Then, how do we cope with such amount of information of what is happening around the world? Are we right to embrace the term "Insta-reality" and what are our everyday challenges with such phenomena where super disturbing news get momentum for a very short period of time? 

New and social media channels, certainly allow us the access and flow of information more than ever before in our history. As it certainly might be a struggle to "digest" so many news - how do we make this an opportunity and resource for more positive action? Is there something that we can learn from campaigns such as #MeToo for example?

These are fears that it might deteriorate, and the two cases are sensible, regardless of whether it comes down to a hazy political plan in the main occasion or Environmental change in the second one.
