Romania, creating future with jobs

Creating Future with Creating Jobs-fighting youth unemployment conference took place in Bucharest on 15 May 2013. As partners for this project in Romania, Volunteers for Ideas and Projects (VIP-Romania) organized an event based on interaction and free debates over topics such as youth unemployment, how to create your own job, what can you do in order to find a job even though you studied something that is not on the market, what are youth opportunities at the moment and what can youngsters do in order to fight youth unemployment. 

The event began with an introduction by Dan Croitoru, about what Challenge:Future is, why was this event organized and how can youth get involved in Challenge:Future and take advantage of all the opportunities our global platform brings. 

Next, the floor has been taken by Mrs. Elisabeta Stanciulescu, an ex university professor and an independent expert in sociology and human potential development. With a calm voice, Mrs. Stanciulescu brought to our attention two important topics.

1. What work and career really signify in today's world and the need for an accurate information based on the fact that most young people who fail to find a job are victims of extremely attractive slogans such as „do what you love” promoted by many "sellers of illusions". As well, there is a need for profound changes regarding the attitudes of young people. Unemployment becomes a normal stage of development in today’s world and the most crucial thing while unemployed is what we do with the extra time we have, do we develop new skills, learn, acquire new information or we stay in the same place hoping that luck while struck and we’ll get a job.

2. Education: how to prepare for employment. Mrs. Stanciulescu said “school is often criticized for not preparing young people for life. The experience as a teacher and then as a professional who helps young people to discover and develop their potential, led me to say that school largely operates today as one of the "vendors of illusions"; otherwise, recruiters, employers and career counselors often report that - beyond the poor knowledge and skills of many graduates - the biggest problem is the "patterns" in their thinking and attitude. 

In my opinion, one of the most effective solutions is that, since the age at which the law gives the right to hire a youngster (16 years in Romania), all learning processes, including those in school, should be organized as jobs (with specific, clearly defined "job descriptions" which include teamwork, managers, leaders and so on and especially with the types of responsibility, rewards and sanctions for each specific job). My challenge to you would be to initiate a pilot project of this type.” 

Another important moment on the agenda was when Ms. Dana Marca spoke about „Brain Drain”, starting a debate on the idea of working in your own country and trying to find your own career there or whether one should leave just because you have other opportunities.  The general perspective has been that „Brain Drain” is a bad phenomenon because all skilled workers migrate in countries where the remuneration is bigger. This issue affects both the economic and social development of the home country. On the other hand, participants mutually agreed that people can’t be stopped to search their own way in life and hope for a better future because that would mean to limit their freedom. 

Asking participants about the event, they said:

Vlad Bujdei-Tebeică: As a participant at the conference Creating Future with Creating Jobs- fighting youth unemployment I can say that I left with a stronger feeling of self security and confidence in my own abilities. Speakers spoke about very important issues that young people face every day. I support the idea that individuals shouldn't force themselves through a career their whole lives just to be able to earn a living, so the symbiosis between work and pleasure is paramount. This idea was put forth and reiterated during this conference, and all that I can say is that young people should find out about these things early in their lives, before committing to any career. 

Roșca Gheorghe Octavian: I liked Ms. Stanciulescu. She showed us why we have youth unemployment and where we have to strike in order to address this issue, because it can’t be solved, but diminished considerably. Above all, she captured our attention and made us ask ourselves what will we do to change something after we attend such an event? Also I had no idea what Challenge:Future is before I heard Dan. I definitely became very interested about both challenges and future and also how can those two stand together in Challenge:Future.

Very good points shared! Especially "...the most crucial thing while unemployed is what we do with the extra time we have, do we develop new skills, learn, acquire new information or we stay in the same place hoping that luck while struck and we’ll get a job."
I believe this would hold true for my home country Macedonia as well. Great event, hope many more to come!

Quite interesting points by Mrs. Elisabeta Stanciulescu. Also, an interesting debate around "working in your own country and leaving your country just because you have other opportunities." I agree that Brain Drain is antithetical to robust and sustainable economic growth and development, especially because the Cream of a country or regions end up working for enriching other economies. Nevertheless, naturally as humans we are always seeking ways to better our lives, the society and meet the basic needs of life. I think the mindset when people go outside of country should be "let me go away from my comfort zone, to the stretch zone, where I will meet new people, experience work in a new environment, learn new skills and new ways of thinking and doing. And definitely return home one day to use my wealth of knowledge and experience to make socio-economic impact in my country.
