by Hina Hazrat on 18th January, 2013 at 1:36 AM CEST

Nowadays, plastic bags are seen everywhere, it’s common to see people carrying their shopping items in plastic bags. There are many disadvantages associated with plastic bags which can be minimized by making use of more eco friendly stuff in our daily lives such as paper bags. Plastic bags cause environmental damage; it takes years and years to decay utterly. Plastic bags not only have adverse effects on our natural habitats, but have also been found to be responsible for the death of many animals, mainly on account of the suffocation encountered on eating them. Moreover, plastic bags are enormously durable which has resulted in increase levels of pollution. Plastic bags are not biodegradable and this is the reason that burning is the method which is used to get rid of them, this burning of plastic release toxic fumes into the environment which ultimately makes a greater contribution in air pollution. The disadvantages associated with plastic bags cannot be neglected as it is harming the environment by various means. The most important drawback of plastic bags is that they are not renewable.

It is very indispensable to think about saving our environment by full ardor and endless devotion. In March 2012 I organized an event named, “Let’s Switch to Paper Bags- Save Environment!”. There were around 50 children and youngsters of the community involved in the event. Message of using plastic bags and its harmful effects on our health indirectly and on environment directly was spread. The event proceeded ahead by cleaning whole community premises and gathering all plastic bags present on ground in a single trash, also the message of health and hygiene was given to the participants involved in the event. This was just a single step for making our environment greener, if paper bags are used in our daily lives, many of the harmful effects on environment associated with plastic bags can be gotten rid of. Paper bags are 100 per cent reusable, recyclable and biodegradable, also they are environmentally preferred. Moreover it is a renewable resource – comes from trees.

We all have to take a green-action towards making our world a better place to subsist in; resolving to use paper bags is a green-step towards making the world a greener. Also, you can switch to reusable bags can be made by clothes which are still a green way to go, you can be creative and have an unique bag.

Yea, febers from plastic bags killed my favourite coq some years ago. I was rearing fowls then and became a friend to this one particular coq. Sadly enough, he died and I was determine to know why. I became a surgeon on him and did a thourough autopsy just to find out that he had swallowed fibers form a plastic bag and it blocked food from moving in the intestine. I dread pastic bags!

I like this piece very much. Unfortunately, in Egypt there are no paper bags, nowhere that I know of at least. I think the least that I can do is encourage the place where plastic bags are available.

Nicely written Hina. However there are some plastic bags i seen which are also bio-degradaeable. One important point is public awareness for cleanliness. I have seen society with plastic bags but they are using it wisely.

There should be laws and strict fines made on people who use them :)

i don't really like the idea of plastic bags. i read somewhere that they can make 700 plastic bags from a 15 year old tree. the world demands are more than 10 million a day that is 14 000 trees a day. if my informations are wrong please correct me. but i really support the idea of bags made from clothes, love it

That's a great idea. This will help us to keep the environment clean by not using the hazardous plastic which is very difficult to recycle.
