Peace Follows Tolerance

by Dharmesh Bhadja on 22nd June, 2012 at 11:20 AM CEST

“If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.”- John F. Kennedy

The Parliament of Religions opened on 11 September 1893 at the Art Institute of Chicago as part of the World's Columbian Exposition. On this day Vivekananda gave his first brief address. He represented India and Hinduism. Though initially nervous, he bowed to Saraswati, the goddess of learning and began his speech with, "Sisters and brothers of America!”. To these words he got a standing ovation from a crowd of seven thousand, which lasted for two minutes.

“My thanks to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the Orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honor of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration. I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true…” I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human-beings: "As the different streams having their sources in different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee."

Coin of Peace has two sides, personal and legislative.

Thousands of people have died in bloody unrest from Africa to Pakistan, while terrorists plot bombings and kidnappings. Wars drag on in Iraq and Afghanistan etc. this signifies immediate necessity of peace at legislative level.

Other type of battle is constantly going on in day to day life. We cannot accept difference. Usually we feel, “Sometime they cannot understand me. Even after good discussion, our perspectives differ so much that we can draw the single line.”- It is not uncommon situation for any team, any family or friend circle.

More to this, almost all the day to day life conflicts are conflicts of opinions. All the dissatisfaction and disappointment originates not from difference of opinions but inability to accept that difference. And here comes the role of tolerance in life.

Individuality is the highest gift from God. Each of us is blessed with unique motives and skills. Weather we are aware or not, but everyone has unique role to play on this beautiful planet.

Great Voltaire said - “What is tolerance? - It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly - that is the first law of nature.”

The path towards peace is path of tolerance. It is not absence of differences and diversities but it is readiness to live with differences and accepting other with due respect and freedom.

“Laws alone cannot secure freedom of expression; in order that every man presents his views without penalty there must be spirit of tolerance in the entire population.” Albert Einstein

How have you tolerated diversity by accepting the differences of others?

We definetly need peace in the World and in my country Nigeria, religious crises, ethnic rivary should not be an issue. Let us all tolerate one another differences with respect and love, that's all we need LOVE.

Great article Dharmesh :)

this line is just perfect: "Weather we are aware or not, but everyone has unique role to play on this beautiful planet.''

I think Challenge Future is doing great job with involving people, from so many diverse places, to be united. And thanks to many challenges, we can actually see how great it is when there are so many differences. (different people, different cultures, different so many things, but it is so great :D we can learn from each other)

I truly feel what you feel and what you have managed to turn into words. Unity in diversity is what we need. People call me naive and tell me that the fact that I have a Peace Oath written on my wall is ridiculous and childish, but I just wish that they could all have it as their personal mantra. The world has gone crazy on us, the planet is punishing us, and the vast majority of its inhabitants treats these issues as seen on movies, as if world peace and global warming are only there to be used when making fun of comedy movies. it is sad, but i think that speaking and telling the truth, voicing it openly will eventually help us and force us to face the heard truth of present circumstances.

And i wish to say that here in Montenegro older people talk :it is better to we have only tea and bread -and to live in peace ,than we have all goods of this world -and to live in war :)

This is really an interesting article which shows the importance of tolerance not only on world-wide scale, but also on individual level. "Individuality is the highest gift from God"-I absolutely agree with this statement. Often what people do not understand is that differences make this world beautiful. We always have to remember"ALL DIFFERENT, ALL EQUAL". Great article. I enjoyed reading.
