Perspective of World Sustainability

by Johanny Arilexis Perez Sierra on 12th May, 2011 at 11:47 AM CEST

According to (Singhal, 2001)* after II World War, industrialized countries provided technical and financial assistance to help countries´development so that they progress, thus reducing poverty and other social problems. This is partly philanthropic reasons, but the main focus was to to restrict the spread of Russian influence (Communism) in the Third World.

Grant funds were used efficiently and large amounts of money were lost due to mismanagement, personal agendas and greed of politicians. Consequently, poverty is rooted becoming the biggest social problem in the Third World.

At the 1992 Rio Declaration, Agenda 21, the concept of sustainable development became fashionable. It was well accepted both by developed countries as those in developing countries. Third World countries saw a glimmer of hope for reducing poverty and urgent social reforms, including those related to shortages of food, medicine and other essential items.

Industrialized countries perceived that support was being mismanaged discouraging some of their efforts. With the end of the Cold War, industrialized countries non-communist world no longer needed to find "friends" in the Third World to fight the spread of communism which resulted in cutting the funds aid to developing countries. Consequently, developing countries faced financial crisis. These countries spent more on its military clothing than on food, health and other vital needs, resulting in problems of hunger, famine and health.

Due to the growing global crisis, economic instability and insecurity, the focus was shifted to the basic survival of the third world and the need to achieve economic stability and security in countries developed. This made sustainable development a high priority in the short term.

The world is now aware that the sustainability and growth are close partners in reaching a long term socio-economic security. The principles of sustainability tend to be modified again by better positioning of political and personal in all individuals and nations. The survival of world in the long term lies in the hands of those who reach peace, safety and welfare for all, including governments and individuals.

While some developed countries enjoy a high quality of life, others have indicators such as:

  • Low per capita income
  • Underfeeding and absence of protein and other nutrients in the diet, which causes problems for growing children.
  • High population growth: results from the high birth rate, more than 2% annually.
  • Low density of infrastructure, lack of a modern transport network, public and private buildings, etc.
  • Dominance of agriculture: no mechanization and modernization of farming systems, thereby creating dependencies in natural conditions.
  • Minimum Industrialization
  • High rates of illiteracy, prevents any development program.

Under this historical and current context: What does C:F youth have to say to make sustainability accessible to all corners of the world?

thank you Johanny for emphasizing this very important topic! The whole world today is in the phase of awareness but still not in the phase of actions. "Why big changes still not happen?” Because they require the change inside of each of us.

for CF our approach is clear - we are not treating Sustainability as separate topic but as fully embedded in ALL - competition, QCs, Summit, The Future Book, Chapters, all our actions.

Also, after great results of our CF Survey on the future we are encouraged to prepare the second one linked to the question what should be done that Sustainability will work. You are all encouraged to propose the relevant questions.
