Get S.M.A.R.T

by Darko Mojsoski on 3rd May, 2011 at 3:55 AM CEST

One of the biggest gifts in our lives is the power of choice. There is a choice between going after our goals, objectives and want we want or continue making excuses. You have to choose between letting life make choices about what you do or choosing to direct your life as you want.

Every single person in the world has some picture about what they want in their life. But there is a huge difference between goals and vague dreams. Also there is a difference between goals and objectives. Objectives can be considered as a subset of goals. It is a goal that meets five criteria S.M.A.R.T., which stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic/Rewarding and Time bound.

1. Specific – Important so you can know when you have achieved your outcome. It is related with what you are going to do, why is it important to do it? What do you want to ultimately accomplish?

2. Measurable – Choose a measurable goal or objective, so you can see the changes occur. Measuring your objective, helps you stay on track, reach your target dates and experience the excitement of getting nearer to reaching your ultimate goal.

3. Attainable – The first thing you will think of about what you want is whether you can achieve it. If your objectives are far out of your reach, you won’t commit to doing them.

4. Realistic/Rewarding – If your objective is not realistic, then it is more likely that you are not going to achieve it. You will need to modify and reevaluate it. Ask yourself how your objectives and goals are going to benefit you.

5. Time Bound – Set a timeframe for your goals and objectives. The deadline too must be attainable and realistic.

If you can be fairly sure that your goals and objectives are S.M.A.R.T. you can set about achieving them. One thing that stops people from achieving what they want are excuses. There are good and bad excuses. An excuse can be classified as good if it can be applied to everyone who has been in the same situation without exception. Remember that life is not measured by the quality of your excuses. Unless you have good exception, set your intent, assess your situation, make a S.M.A.R.T. plan and work on realizing it.

Each goal, when achieved, becomes a monument of homage!

I agree with this part about excuses. Ponekad ljudi prave previĊĦe izgovora.
Also, I think if you really work hard to achieve goal - sucess will come.
And this S.M.A.R.T. criteria can be helpful.

Bravo Darko :-)

This looks very familiar. Ah! AIESEC! I did come across this in the goal-setting trainings over the years. It is definitely a good move to be S.M.A.R.T. while setting goals. It has worked for me.
