Tip of the Week #21: Keep the Water for Future

by Damla Aktan on 22nd March, 2011 at 2:48 AM CEST

Water: The symbol of the fluidity of things in life. But if you do not control how you use it, then you will definitely loose it.

Water in nature exists in liquid, solid, and gaseous states and acts as a dynamic equilibrium on Earth. However, the human logic forgets about its vulnerability and is so prone to use it inefficiently. By 2050, while climate change could reduce the amount of water available by 10-15 per cent, demand for water continues to increase. This forges all the people on Earth to consume it more carefully. So how to change the balance in favor of the water? Environmental Protection Agency, gives clues which during the day each and every person on earth may contribute saving water through paying a bit attention on how to use it efficiently. Here we go!

Enjoy bath but still save the water:

  • Do not let the water run while shaving or brushing teeth.
  • Take short showers instead of tub baths. Turn off the water while soaping or shampooing.
  • If you must use a tub, close the drain before turning on the water and fill the tub only half full. Bathe small children together.
  • Never use your toilet as a waste basket.

Cook Delicious, Wash the Cleanest, but still keep the water in tap:

  • Keep drinking water in the refrigerator instead of letting the faucet run until the water is cool.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables in a basin. Use a vegetable brush.
  • Do not use water to defrost frozen foods; thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher; wash only full loads.
  • Wash only full loads of laundry or use the appropriate water level or load size selection on the washing machine.

Decorate your homes with high-efficiency plumbing appliances, save about 30% of indoor water use:

  • Install low-flow faucet aerators and showerheads.
  • Consider purchasing a high efficiency washing machine which can save over 50% in laundry water and energy use.
  • Repair all leaks. A leaky toilet can waste 200 gallons per day. To detect leaks in the toilet, add food coloring to the tank water. If the colored water appears in the bowl, the toilet is leaking.

Go Outdoor, but still save the water:

  • Wash the car with water from a bucket, or consider using a commercial car wash that recycles water.
  • When using a hose, control the flow with an automatic shut-off nozzle.
  • Avoid purchasing recreational water toys which require a constant stream of water.
  • Consider purchasing a new water-saving swimming pool filter.
  • Use a pool cover to reduce evaporation when pool is not being used.
  • Do not install or use ornamental water features unless they recycle the water. Use signs to show the public that water is recycled. Do not operate during a drought.

You see, there are many ways of saving life with just small steps in a day. Water is the beauty of your life, let’s join us and use it for a better world! Let’s drink a cup of water for the future of the world!

Water is life, there is no life without water. I think that although we make these small actions make a difference, we should think of leaving our children a better world and start doing good deeds, it is time to act. Save energy.

The water is an element very important for surviver, without them we can't live. We need the water day to day. Humans are main destroyer of this element very important. We use the water for differents activities and we don't give them a treatment before pour to a rivers, lakes and ocean. With this, we are destroying the home of many acuatic animals. We should do some for don't allow this.

Its hard to value something that we can access every day. Sometimes its so easy, that its harder for us to believe that one day it might end. Thats what happen to our ancestors. We should not fall into the same mistake. Lets value our primary source to live c:
NOW..

Damla, I agree with you, we should start with small things, so we opened a large. All these small actions can contribute to save water. It's hard to convince people in that, becouse we do not appreciate something until we lose it.

Great text Damla.
Unfortunately, the general awareness on this subject is to low.
I fear that by the time we realize the importance of water, it will be too late.
Thank you :)

Hey! I could only have time to read what you all wrote and to reply! Thank you for all these valuable comments! The water is something very special for not only the world, but for our health, for our psychology and for our future. But we all are not aware of what human can create really in the world. So, I think we all should find a way to spread these very small tips as much as we can, locally! Please share at least 5 minutes to speak about this at least to 2 people during the day. The best way is to start with : "Look, I read something about water on...." I am sure that this will not take more than 10 minutes of whole the day...
