C:F competition timeline for next year

by C:F Team on 22nd February, 2010 at 10:14 AM CEST

Last week, Weekly Hot Topic featured one interesting report by OECD on the subject on bioeconomy of the future. Jatin, Mark, Tilen and Vallabha have share their opinions of this topic. Jatin believes that the factors that shape bioeconomy of the future is awareness as well as availability. Mark and Tilen think that the development of bioeconomy depends on policies that encourage the use and growth of bioeconomy. Vallabha says that innovation is the key of bioeconomy of the future. If you missed on on that discussion, you can read more about bioeconomy here: The bioeconomy is the key.

This week, we would like to ask a question that is crucial to the next year's Challenge:Future competition. We would like to know: When do you think the C:f competition should take place? How long each round of competition should be? And should the final summit be held?

We are aware that members have experienced some time conflicts during the running of our competition, so we'd like to get a rough idea of what would be a suitable time for you. Please feel free to talk about your school's schedule and holiday periods. We will take all the information given to us into consideration in order to come up with a competition timeline next year (however, keep in mind that there's no such thing as the perfect plan).

Have a suggestion for an upcoming Weekly Hot Topic? Let us know at info@challengefuture.org. If your topic gets featured you'll earn extra sparks!

Really curious to hear your thoughts on this one! Of course, you can also let us know if this year's timeline was good for you and if you'd like to keep it as it is :)

I guess there wont be a consistent answer as all of us have different schedules and university systems. But I think the best time to have the Finals in Slovenia is when the weather is best there.

Yes, true Vallabh, although we're looking forward to hearing different opinions, especially to avoid placing important deadlines at inappropriate times.

And I like your answer about aligning the final event with the weather here :) I can tell you Bled is really nice in Spring, so I think the timing for that is right :)

I'll have to second the suggestion to have more time to prepare for the semifinals. It's not possible to cater to everyone, but having more time would certainly allow contestants to plan their time around any important deadlines.

Well I have a different opinion this time :)
I would say that if the competition extends itself over a large period of time, some of the participants will lose interest or something else will come up. I would go for 2-3 weeks for preparing the solution and 2 weeks at the most for voting and grading the solutions. The actual competition should not exceed 3, max 4 months. And yes, middle or end of May sounds great for the Final and the Summit in Bled.

Thanks for all comments and Q so far!

It is really a tough problem to optimize all phases of the competition as well as all people involved. For example, it was very difficult for judges to grade solutions of the first phase in very stressful December as more of half of them are coming from business. Furthermore, we have received many feedbacks from SF teams that January-February is very hectic exam period at the majority of schools.

So, we wonder if the first phase in January and SF in March would work better?

Definitely skipping December is a good option. I would even say skip January and mid of Feb to overcome somehow the hectic exam period. Mid Feb-Mid March=1st period, mid March end of April =Semifinals and mid-end May= Finals.
Total time= 3 months or 3 months and 1/2. We overcome fatigue, distractions and losing interest over large periods of time.

Maybe a very fast challange will be great, 3 months, one month to create and post the Idea, another to semifinals and the last to finals.

i'd like it to correlate with uni breaks if possible? i agree that spreading over 3 months is a good idea
